What Is LASEK?

LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a flapless surface laser treatment that combines the precision of excimer laser reshaping with the safety of preserving the corneal epithelium. Unlike LASIK, no corneal flap is created — the thin outer epithelial layer is gently loosened with diluted alcohol and moved aside, the cornea is reshaped, and the epithelium is repositioned as a natural protective bandage.

LASEK is the preferred option for patients with thin corneas, dry eyes, or occupations with a higher risk of eye trauma (athletes, law enforcement, military) — as it preserves more corneal tissue and eliminates flap-related complications.

How LASEK Works

A diluted alcohol solution is applied to gently loosen the epithelium — the thin, outermost protective layer of the cornea. This layer is carefully moved aside intact. The excimer laser then reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct the refractive error, following a personalized ablation profile. The epithelium is then repositioned and a soft bandage contact lens is placed to protect the surface during healing.

Over 5–7 days, the epithelium regenerates and the bandage lens is removed. Vision improves gradually during this period, with final results stabilizing over several weeks. The key advantage: because no flap is created, the structural integrity of the cornea is better preserved — making LASEK a safer choice for high-impact activities.

LASEK recovery takes 5–7 days versus 2–3 days for LASIK. The first 2–3 days involve more discomfort (light sensitivity, watering), managed with prescribed drops. By day 5, most patients have functional vision. The bandage contact lens is removed at the 5–7 day follow-up.

We recommend waiting until after your bandage lens removal (day 5–7) before flying. This ensures the epithelium has healed and reduces the risk of dry eye discomfort during the flight. Plan for a minimum 7–10 day stay.

Neither is universally better — each suits different patients. LASEK is safer for thin corneas and eliminates flap complications, but has a longer recovery. LASIK offers faster visual recovery. Your surgeon will recommend the best option based on your corneal assessment.
